Few Americans have living wills | Insurance Leads News from ...

February 8th, 2013

Living wills and life insurance aren't addressed with the type of care and attention necessary.

A new study suggests that many life insurance leads emerge from individuals that may not be as prepared for end-of-life scenarios as one might suspect.

New polling data from legal information website FindLaw.com reveals that fewer than one out of every three Americans has a living will.

As most agents are well aware, a living will is slightly different from a regulator will, in that it provides details on what people want to have done while they?re alive but are ill. For example, if a man or woman experiences a disease that requires them to be placed on life support, a living will provides caretakers and physicians with the information they need to know that addresses how they should proceed in prolonging their life.

Stephanie Rahlfs, an attorney and editor at FindLaw.com, says that because many people don?t have these kinds of wills, courts are often the ones that ultimately decide what medical care prescriptions should be implemented.

?Without a living will, there is no clear directive for families and medical professionals to follow in terms of what types of care should be administered or withheld in the event that you become incapacitated or unable to communicate your medical treatment preferences,? said Rahlfs. ?Living wills and health care directives let you specify which treatments you want, and who will make decisions when you?re not able to.?

She added that individuals? wishes need to be spelled out clearly so that their loved ones understand fully what treatments should be put into place.

Living wills aren?t the only end-of-life issues policyholders often need to address. They also may need to brush themselves up on life insurance. A recent poll from LIMRA found that less than 33 percent of Americans were able to successfully pass a life insurance comprehension exam.
