There is a type of hearing in criminal law (at least there was in WI where I worked) that was frequently ordered by a judge. The hearing is generally conducted after a case has been pending a while and a defendant has rejected a plea offer. The purpose of the hearing is for the plea offer to be read into the record, the judge will ask the defendant whether he/she understands the offer and is in fact rejecting that offer. If the offer is rejected on the record the offer is then withdrawn and the judge may state no further negotiations may be made and a trial date is set. What is the name for that type of proceeding? It has a specific name, a ___________ hearing.
