The Tyranny of the Iron
I am not a slob. My hair is washed, my nails clipped, my teeth brushed and?very often?flossed. Yet many among you would judge me unclean simply because of my radical stance with regard to textiles.
My clothes are wrinkled. I know this is shocking for you to hear, so I will repeat it as plainly as I'm able: My attire exists in its natural state. It is not ironed, pressed, or steamed. My shirt-fronts shrivel. My pant-legs pucker.
Don't look down your nose at me. (And please be aware that my nostrils' hairs are as neatly trimmed as yours, if not more so. Also: well-scrubbed nose pores.) This is an important choice that I have made. I stand behind?nay, within?my wrinkled clothes, unashamed.
The benefits are manifold. I waste zero time slaving over an ironing board. Squander no money on superfluous laundry services. Budget no mindshare to the relative dishevelment of my cuffs, box pleats, and plackets.
You will say I look less than neat. You'll tell me I'm one or two corners shy of squared away. I contend that the deficiency is all yours. You are beholden to an ancient despot: the tyranny of crispness.
Cursory Internet research suggests that people like you have been harshing the mellow of people like me for thousands of years. Misguided ancient Egyptians smoothed their clothes using heavy stones. The Chinese employed primitive hot irons (or, as I call them, "wrinkle subjugators") that were essentially maneuverable pans filled with smoldering coals. The electric iron was patented in the United States on a dark day in 1882. Our current fashion landscape is blighted by creepy no-iron shirts that are infused with formaldehyde. I am imparting this knowledge simply to make you aware of a long, unbroken pattern of oppression.
Ask yourself: Why is it so vital that I be smoothened? There's no functional advantage to eliminating clothing wrinkles?unless you are competing in a timed event that favors reduced drag coefficients. What you're really doing when you leave your house in ironed clothes is engaging in an elaborate signaling ritual. You demonstrate that you have devoted time and resources to ironing (or to compelling other people to iron for you), which in turn connotes respect for a (silly) social compact. You use your crisp clothes to advertise yourself as a rule-follower, and you hope that in turn you will derive benefit from being perceived as one who follows rules. "Oh, he took the time to press his shirt before he showed up for this job interview. So I guess he must be a reliable and trustworthy employee." It's thinking like this that encourages broad-based evil to fester.
Consider the aesthetics. Your preference for unpuckered expanses of fabric no doubt stems from a stupid quirk of biology. Wrinkles suggest age and decrepitude?the opposite of youth?and by ironing you are clinging to a falsely achieved sense of smoothosity. It's like a facelift for your clothes. You really don't need it. (Nor, incidentally, do you need a facelift for your face. I happen to think crow's feet are hot. Marry me, Connie Britton!)
No doubt you are now marshaling counterarguments. "But Seth," you say, "aren't washing your hair and brushing your teeth and denuding your nostrils just different manifestations of the same social compact?" No! Let me say that with an additional exclamation point: No!! Personal grooming eliminates odors, health risks, and nostril hairs, all of which are fundamental bads. Wrinkled clothing is the opposite. It is a fundamental good.
"But Seth," you say, "whaaaaa?" To which I reply: You heard me. Wrinkled clothes represent fabric as it is, not as we wish it to be. Cotton, for instance, is meant to luxuriate in those criss-crossing gulches, those puffs of pockmarks. It is born in the fields, born from the ground! Why can we not find it in our hearts to accept its inherent wildness? Why must we labor to tame it, for centuries on end, in an endless stalemate of human versus wrinkle? We will never win. Wisdom dictates: Just give in. Free your fabric and your mind will follow.
We would save time, and money, and effort. So I implore you, throw down your irons (once they have adequately cooled) and join me. We could be happy together, in the warp and weft of a brand new world.

Music Lessons Teach Valuable Life Lessons | arts and entertainment
For one, the kids learn the importance of discipline early on during the course of them taking Guitar lessons for example. Just as they learn to play musical instruments, these students, at the same time, acknowledge the need to practice and sharpen their skills in order to perform better. Also, as students, these kids likewise learn how to recover from their mistakes while they seek to find the smooth transition from failure to success. This likewise translates to mean that a student has what it takes to persevere amidst hard times as he or she strives to accomplish something no matter what.
And as if those are not enough, a class like this likewise provides the venue for the students to improve the way they relate with other people. They learn about the concept of cooperation and experience how it's like to work with one another towards a common goal. From applying what they learn by means of providing an accompaniment to a song, they later on make considerable contributions to the world they were born to.
At this point, it is already very obvious that music lessons train and mould a student not only in all things music but practically, in most things about life as well. A student takes home with him and her useful and universally applicable learning that is significant throughout his or her life. His or her gains clearly goes beyond mastering how to sing a song or play an instrument pretty well.
All of the things which a person acquires by means of taking up music lessons are instrumental in living his or her life in a manner which allows, encourages and dares him or her to realise his or her fullest potential possible. Regardless of whether a student chooses to eventually pursue a musical career or not, it's for certain that he or she will find that the learning gained is that which sees him or her through this life in general. And with such significant edge, this person really has what it takes to rise above the challenges that come his or her way.

Spiritual Self Improvement and New Age Parapsychology Books ...
Many people believe that new age books are different from spiritual books, even though there are so many books available that are described as new age spiritual books. If we look at the terms new age and spiritual, we find similarities, where spiritual refers to soul or spirit and new age has been described as ?of or relating to spiritual and consciousness raising movements?. New age books encompass health, medicine, philosophy, religion and the occult. And yet, the term new age was only coined in recent decades, mainly from the 1970?s. So that begs the question ? is there such a thing as a New Age?
Many self improvement so-called new age books (and spiritual books) that have been written over these past few decades are emphatic that we are indeed in a new age spiritual era that is NEW in every aspect to what has come before. However, researching older spiritual books and philosophy books shows that humankind has passed through eras of high enlightenment before ? inspirational times of metaphysical and spiritual awareness that equals or surpasses our current times. So is this perhaps not a new age as such, but simply a remembering of metaphysical, esoteric, inspirational parapsychology and spiritual powers that all of us possess but have temporarily forgotten. If this be the case, then perhaps a more apt term would be Mind Body Spirit.
Which brings us to another so-called new age term ? parapsychology. New age parapsychology is the study of paranormal phenomena and the term parapsychology comes from the Greek para ?beside, beyond? and psychology, derived from the Greek psyche ?soul, mind?. So, here we are back to the spiritual again or, as mentioned above, Mind Body Spirit. And yet, some people still insist that spiritual books, new age books and new age parapsychology are totally separate themes. Perhaps that?s why more and more people are coining the phrase Mind Body Spirit in an attempt to mold these various terms into a more unified category.
If we look more closely at the core messages in the various spiritual books, new age books, metaphysical, esoteric, parapsychology, philosophy and even self improvement books, we often find similarities that are sometimes veiled in different terms that could all be better described as Mind Body Spirit. Yes, even philosophy books, which are essentially the belief or system of beliefs accepted as an authoritative account by a group or philosophy school, have similarities to each other and also to the more recent spiritual new age parapsychology and metaphysical esoteric books. The various philosophy books available today, which are scriptures handed down over many centuries that are the core beliefs of the world?s many religions, also have strong similarities in the original message, although the interpretation of these books over the ages has led to contrasting viewpoints.
Considering the strife that such opposing views of philosophy books over the ages has caused, perhaps this new age of parapsychology, with its metaphysical, esoteric and spiritual messages and books will help break down these old belief systems that have divided humanity for so long, particularly when unified under the more acceptable catch-phrase of Mind Body Spirit. The proliferation of self improvement books alone has brought a spiritual awareness to thousands, if not millions, who seek to grow through better knowing themselves. Old philosophy books are being rewritten in more spiritual new age terminology and marketed under various terms, not only new age and spiritual, but also metaphysical books, esoteric books, new age parapsychology, inspirational books, self improvement and even philosophy books. An increasing number of these books are being grouped, on websites and also in physical bookstores, under the Mind Body Spirit label.
The overriding influence of these books is inspirational, encouraging readers to delve deeper into themselves to discover their true spiritual nature and it is encouraging to see so many spiritual new age parapsychology (Mind Body Spirit) books coming out in increasing numbers each year. Two such books are listed on http://www.1-inspirational-quote-book.com/ although many readers place them into various categories. They are a mixture of metaphysical, spiritual, esoteric and self improvement books, even though they are based in a sci-fi theme. Above all, they are inspirational, told from the viewpoint of an extra-terrestrial race of Beings who are concerned about the direction we are taking. Regardless of the various viewpoints, they will easily fall into the more generalized Mind Body Spirit category and, overall, the feedback from readers has been fantastic, many of them describing the books as ?inspirational and thought provoking?. As one reader wrote ?The story slowly engulfed me, drew me in until I was on my own journey. It opened my mind, enticing me to read more. I ask, is this just a novel or a key to our future???

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's economy emerged from its nine-month recession in the July to September quarter, when spending on the Olympics helped it grow by a bigger than expected 1 percent, according to official figures released Thursday.
The number published by the Office for National Statistics beat the market consensus forecast of 0.6 percent growth and will make the Bank of England less likely to approve a further round of economic stimulus in November, analysts say.
The ONS said the result was the strongest quarterly growth in five years, bringing economic output back to the same level of a year ago. It is a first estimate and is subject to revision.
Prime Minister David Cameron, in a message on Twitter, said there was still much to do "but these GDP figures show we are on the right track, and our economy is healing."
Ed Balls, economic spokesman for the opposition Labour Party, said the economy remained "very weak" and there was "no time for complacency."
The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games likely gave the economy a boost, helping employment agencies, the entertainment sector and accommodation, the ONS said, though it gave no estimate of the total impact.
It did say that sales of Olympic tickets that occurred in 2011 and earlier in 2012 ? the ones it statistically allocated to third-quarter economic output ? accounted for 0.2 points of the rise in GDP.
Most analysts warned that beyond these one-time effects, the economy remains weak.
"As the Olympic effects unwind, it is still possible that the economy contracts again in the fourth quarter," said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics.
Others argued that the simple fact the economy grew is good news at a time when many European countries are sliding deeper into recession. About half of the nearby eurozone's 17 economies are in recession and even the largest, like Germany and France, are weakening.
Nida Ali, economic advisor to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club, estimated that when factoring out the one-time boosts, Britain's underlying growth was 0.3 percent, "which is really encouraging, particularly in the difficult external environment."
A breakdown of the ONS figures showed that the dominant services sector, which shrank by 0.1 percent in the second quarter, led the rebound with 1.3 percent growth. Production industries including manufacturing grew by 1 percent but construction activity fell 2.5 percent.

Research reveals Beluga whale that could mimic human voices
It may sound like a whale of a tale, but it's true. Beginning in 1984, scientists in San Diego studied the sounds of a captive male Beluga whale that was able to mimic human voices.?

Surprisingly, scientists said the audio they captured was a whale imitating people. In fact, the whale song sounded so eerily human that divers initially thought it was a human voice.
Handlers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego heard mumbling in 1984 coming from a tank containing whales and dolphins that sounded like two people chatting far away.
It wasn't until one day, after a diver surfaced from the tank and asked, "Who told me to get out?" did researchers realize the garble came from a captive male Beluga whale. For several years, they recorded its spontaneous sounds while it was underwater and when it surfaced.
An acoustic analysis revealed the human-like sounds were several octaves lower than typical whale calls. The research was published online Monday in Current Biology.
Scientists think the whale's close proximity to people allowed it to listen to and mimic human conversation. It did so by changing the pressure in its nasal cavities. After four years of copying people, it went back to sounding like a whale, emitting high-pitched noises. It died five years ago.
Dolphins and parrots have been taught to mimic the patterns of human speech, but it's rare for an animal to do it spontaneously.
The study is not the first time a whale has sounded human. Scientists who have studied sounds of white whales in the wild sometimes heard what sounded like shouting children. Caretakers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada previously said they heard one of the white whales say its name.

Denver-based potash miner signs $2 billion deal with Chinese company
A Denver-based producer of potash ? mined for use mainly in fertilizers ? has reached a $2 billion, 10-year deal to supply a Chinese manufacturer.
Prospect Global Resources said Sichuan Chemical Industry Holding will purchase at least 500,000 metric tons of potash annually, or 25 percent of the projected output of Prospect Global's American West Potash Field in development in Holbrook, Ariz.
The deal valuation reflects market prices of about $475 per metric ton for a total of 5 million metric tons.
Steve Rauzi, Arizona's oil-and-gas administrator and a geologist for the Arizona Geological Survey, said the Holbrook Basin Potash Deposit is huge, with an estimated 700 million to 2.5 billion metric tons of potash. The federal government says domestic potash resources total about 7 billion tons, he said.
"We are very excited," said Rauzi. "We are very optimistic this will come to fruition."
Prospect Global said the deal is believed to be the largest-ever purchase-and-sale contract ? in price and volume ? for a potash mine under development in the United States. It added that the deal is also believed to be one of the largest potash-export contracts in U.S. history.
Prospect Global's American West project would significantly increase U.S. potash production. The U.S. currently imports most of its potash, producing 1.1 million metric tons in 2011, importing 5.6 million and exporting 215,000, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Prospect Global said Monday that once the mine is in production in late 2015 or early 2016, it will create an estimated 700 U.S. domestic jobs in mining, transportation and logistics, mainly in eastern Arizona but also at warehouses and North American ports.
Sichuan Chemical is a state-owned enterprise that is one of China's largest fertilizer manufacturers. The accord provides the company with a large and independent source of a commodity that is critical to meeting the challenge of feeding the world's largest nation, Prospect Global said.
Rauzi said the cattle and timber industries in eastern Arizona have been suffering and that communities such as Holbrook and Snowflake believe the potash mines will give the region an economic boost.
The agreement announced Monday also provides an option for American West to sell and Sichuan Chemical to purchase additional potash.
Prospect Global shares rose 14.5 percent Monday to close at $3.30.

Errors ? Heaven, London 18/10/12
The ceiling seems to be leaking. This is a bit troubling, given that we?re in a club located beneath Charing Cross station, but I?ve moved three times and still the drips keep coming. Most seem to be landing in my drink, clouding the amber a dirty grey: several are making their way slowly down my face.
Really, though, these seem appropriate conditions for watching Esben and the Witch. Theirs is a sound that summons the dark, the murk of the night and the wrath of a storm. More so now, since guitarist Daniel Copeman has started adding drums as well, addressing what was always Esben?s key issue with their live shows: their reliance upon tape for far too much of their impact. Nearly two years on from the generally underwhelming release of their debut album, the Brighton three-piece seem invigoured and combative; the likes of ?Marching Song? reworked and extended into punchier, substantially more kinetic tracks.
They?ve a tendency to blur, however ? the thirty minutes of their set becoming a sludge of minor keys and bleak arpeggios drawn out by a touch too much emphasis upon prescriptive noise. It?s still an alluring spell that Esben craft, but a numbing one as well, like a horror movie with the plot writ large and the jumps all pared away.
It?s far harder to assign the headliners an easy genre label: Errors?aren?t really like anything else. ?Post-rock? has long since become an utter misnomer for whatever it is the three-piece do, their songs a dichotomous meld of dancefloor lure and synth-led solipsism: there?s a Blade Runner melancholy to their bruised electro, the sound of a sentient machine expiring in the neon rain. Again, these environs are well-suited, the Victorian arches and the metallic ducts: the balloons, carried over the heads of the crowd by waves of bass and the tap of hands, maybe less so.
The setlist is surprisingly difficult to recall. Like the support act Errors? songs begin to mesh partway in, the gaps between mere pauses in the narrative, an advertisement break for beards and Scottish accents. ?Tusk? was in there somewhere, as was ?Magna Encarta?, and the ever-brilliant ?Pleasure Palaces?. New EP highpoint ?Relics? appeared at some point, Edinburgh band Magic Eye?s Bek Oliva lending the vocal elements an ethereal quality amidst the strafing keys and reverbed drums.
But the individual tracks aren?t the point. Theirs is an envelope of atmosphere and mood, a commingling of anime vibrancy and future-noir decay. Sure, it?s danceable, in an erratic somebody help him?way, but it?s more than that: this is club music that actually has some kind of heart. And as the house lights come up and Calvin Harris begins to churn between the arches, that seems all the more significant.
